Mismanaging Diagnostic Accuracy Under Congestion

چکیده
Diagnostic processes are difficult to manage because they require the decision maker (DM) dynamically balance benefit of acquiring more diagnostic information against cost doing so. When additional and unattended tasks build up over time, making this tradeoff becomes especially challenging. In their study “Mismanaging Accuracy Under Congestion,” Kremer de Véricourt uncover different biases which DMs subject when decisions while accumulate time. The authors find that, in experiments, overall insufficiently sensitive congestion. As a result, acquire too little at low congestion levels, but much high compared with an optimal normative benchmark. This fact increases both errors levels system. disentangle underlying mechanisms for these effects suggests approaches debias DMs.

Diagnostic Accuracy Under Congestion
In diagnostic services, agents typically need to weigh the benefit of running an additional test and improving the accuracy of diagnosis against the cost of congestion, i.e., delaying the provision of services to others. Our paper analyzes how to dynamically manage this accuracy/congestion tradeoff. To that end, we study an elementary congested service facing an arriving stream of customers. Th...

متن کاملJudgement Accuracy Under Congestion In Service Systems
When serving a customer, service providers typically need to weigh the value of taking time to make an accurate judgement against the cost of delaying the provision of service to others in the system. Our paper presents the first analysis of how to dynamically manage this judgement accuracy/congestion tradeoff. To that end, we study an elementary system where a service provider faces a random s...
متن کاملDiagnostic strategies in nasal congestion
Nasal congestion is a major symptom of upper respiratory tract disorders, and its characterization an important part of the diagnosis of these illnesses. Patient history and assessment of nasal symptoms are essential components of diagnosis, providing an initial evaluation that may be adequate to rule out serious conditions. However, current congestion medications are not always fully effective...

BACKGROUND An increasing number of diagnostic tests and biomarkers have been validated during the last decades, and this will still be a prominent field of research in the future because of the need for personalized medicine. Strict evaluation is needed whenever we aim at validating any potential diagnostic tool, and the first requirement a new testing procedure must fulfill is diagnostic accur...
